IDENTITY & AUTHENTICATION

  • Passkey Phishing — ShinyHunters/Helix Targeting Microsoft 365 (Active Since May 2026): Attackers impersonate IT help-desk staff via SMS and voice calls, luring users to fake Microsoft sign-in pages that capture passkey enrollment or redirect to device-code authentication flows. The attack bypasses FIDO2 cryptography by targeting enrollment processes — not the keys themselves. Microsoft links activity to ShinyHunters and Helix extortion gangs. Mitigations: out-of-band enrollment verification, restrict device-code auth flows, train staff to recognize SSO lure attempts.

  • O-UNC-066 Voice Phishing — Attacker-Controlled Entra Passkey Enrollment (Okta, July 2026): A campaign tracked by Okta used voice-based social engineering to convince users to enroll attacker-controlled passkeys in Microsoft Entra ID, effectively bypassing phishing-resistant MFA. Demonstrates that FIDO2's strongest protections can be circumvented through process abuse and insider-impersonation social engineering.

  • Unit 42 Research — 'Pass the Passkey': Novel Attack Surface in Passwordless Authentication: Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 published research identifying new attack surfaces in FIDO2/passkey authentication workflows. The research covers sync key theft, device-code abuse, and enrollment hijacking as viable paths to compromise passkey-protected accounts without breaking underlying cryptographic protections.

MOBILE SECURITY

  • Midnight Mimosa — Preinstalled Android Firmware Malware on Low-Cost Phones (Bitdefender): Thousands of low-cost, white-label Android devices built on MediaTek platforms ship with the 'com.android.system.lite' malware embedded in system firmware with root-level privileges. Observed across 150+ countries over ~2 years. Capabilities include: rotating payload delivery, Google Play Protect disabling, residential proxy botnet enrollment, ad fraud, and arbitrary permission granting. 13 related Play Store apps (since removed) also identified. Infrastructure overlaps with Android.Phantom (Doctor Web, Jan 2026). Removal requires ADB-level firmware cleanup.

  • Spyware Ads Infecting 6,600 Legitimate Websites — Mobile 'Infection Delivery Network' (iVerify/Axios): Hackers are embedding spyware-laden advertisements into over 6,600 legitimate websites, creating a broad-reach mobile infection delivery network. Technique exploits standard ad SDK APIs to serve payloads without app store vetting. Targets mobile users browsing via browsers.
